Why am I not surprised to finally see some Reports on the Taliban Using Skype to Make Secure Phone Calls. Sharing is good… It's kind of hilarious that the company Skype with head offices London, Estonia and the US has never been questioned on this matter… which might put Skype on the Hot Seat.
"The Taliban (Pashto: طالبان ṭālibān, also anglicised as Taleban; translation: "students") are a Sunni Islamist and Pashtun nationalist movement[3] that ruled most of Afghanistan from 1996 until 2001, when their leaders were removed from power by a cooperative military effort between the Northern Alliance and NATO countries. Committed fundamentalist insurgents, often described as "Taliban" in the media, originating, and currently based in the Frontier Tribal Areas of Pakistan, [4] are engaged in a protracted guerrilla war against the current government of Afghanistan, allied NATO forces participating in Operation Enduring Freedom, and the NATO-led International Security Assistance Force (ISAF),[5] and an effort to expand their operations and influence in Pakistan." Now of course everybody is entitled to use Skype. So why not the Taliban. They are simply also part of the user population of over the alledged (call it a fake number) 330 million users. Okay granted there is a steady growth reported on 13 million extra Skype users, but remember the growth is not exponential anymore.
There is more going on. Skype is still such a box of potential dynamite for the telecom industry (remember they don't have Skype-in / Skype-out numbers in many countries yet) that In a Letter the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) Skype accused the Wireless Industry more specifically impeding consumer choice and skirting Commission policy. ""Instead of broadly carrying forward the Commission's tremendous strides toward open networks, the word coming from the CTIA gathering is that open networks present a multitude of problems for the carriers, and that to protect consumers from too many choices, network operators must be the gatekeepers of the consumer experience," the letter stated. "This is inconsistent with the Commission's Broadband Policy Statement and a market structure that maximizes choice and innovation.""
So with the Taliban using Skype VoIP bug to evade capture by using Skype . Maybe they are using the latest Hulger's Pappa Skype wooden phone to Skype with Style… J it is no surprise that Skype's is Under Pressure. How much 256-AES encrypted 3cellphones would Skype have sold in Afghanistan by the way ? Maybe the Skype PR agency 3 Monkeys can come up with some proper answer, that suits the gentlemen of Skype and 3Skypephone.com. I am sure those phones that allow unregistered communication are in high demand when you need to hide what you are talking about…
Kind of normal also that on the matter of In-flight Internet: Web site surfing is allowed, but not phone calls via a VoIP or Skype system. See also Internet in the Sky: Surf but Don't Call
Let's stop this morning rant by stating that Skype is to Stay with EBay, since it is a Tough Sell to Investors. See also Marcial: Time to Bid on eBay Shares? And How Would an eBay Layoff Impact Sellers?
