Skype.com redirects visits from Chinese IP addresses to the homepage of Tom-Skype that has Trojan horse capabilities.

Fortune_cookie It's kind of old news (for me) the tom.com content-filter by Skype, but the news resurfaced. "Dynamic Internet Technologies (DIT), a North America-based company known for its products that override Internet censorship, recently discovered that the Internet phone service company Skype is cooperating with Internet censorship in China. On Monday DIT announced that it has tested and confirmed that Skype.com redirects visits from Chinese IP addresses to the homepage of Tom-Skype that has Trojan horse capabilities." source.

Lee (met him one day in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia) just threw me this blog article" Solve Linking IDs Before Dealing with the Social-Graph. by @ 6:54 pm.    Filed under "Social Layer"IdentitySocial Networking OK first up - I put this site up more as a placeholder for my current academic work. I needed a space to portray the academic persona rather than the more common business persona. After getting some stub articles in place, I’ve left it alone as I’ve been thoughtfully at work. I feel the time is now right to begin speaking out on areas that I have been thinking about. I will start by replying to Brad’s call for feedback on his “Thoughts on the Social Graph

Annoy-o-tron.

Annoyatron ThinkGeek Annoy-a-tron would be useless against an army of Snowbots, but it's very effective at disturbing that guy in the sales department or your "friend" down the hall. With its thin design and embedded magnet for easy hiding, the Annoy-a-tron can be placed in a variety of locations. Select one of the three sound choices (2 kHz, 12 kHz, or alternating) and push the switch to the on position. Place it in a proper hiding spot and let the "fun" begin. here.

Russian Skype Recorder revealed.

From Russia with love : " Moscow-based ExtraLabs Software has released its Skype Recorder v.1.2 for download on its website. The company describes the recorder as an easy-to-use tool that can "record Skype calls automatically". source. It is simple that it is scary. I have always wondered (unrelated to this software) what tools are out there that are capable of recording skype conversations without the knowledge of the users. For sure a scary thought. Personally I don't record calls on the Skype-channels. Nobody would talk to me. It poses concern in companies too, where not everybody is allowed to simply start recording conversations.

Now get the Russian Skype Recorder.

" Skype Recorder is a surprisingly easy-to-use tool for recording Skype audio conversations. Skype Recorder can record Skype calls automatically. The software has a number of additional handy features such as an automatic record encoding into MP3/WMA/OGG/WAV format, all Skype versions support, conversations in either single or dual audio track recording, hidden mode work, a built-in audio player, a built-in FTP-client and an easy-going interface.

It is really simple to create a new recording. All you need is to run Skype Recorder.

The software will start the recording by itself as soon as you start talking on Skype. The conversation over, Skype Recorder will encode the recording to the specified format and will save the ready file on your hard drive. Due to the built-in audio player, you will be able to listen to the recording in no time and do whatever you like – delete it, move or upload to the site."

Skype’s cooperation with internet censorship in China

I noticed something simular earlier this year I think on tom.com (meaning a special version of Skype by tom.com with a content-filter) when downloading http://skype.tom.com . So the below is not really new information, but just probably a revelation for some of us. Basically Skype is just a company here that provides a special version of Skype for the Chinese territory. That is how I see it. I know that there is a list in China with the forbidden words, and since they are forbidden nobody talks about them … Censorship in China, we all know it exists. Basically don't do funny things.. Here is the news-line.

" Dynamic Internet Technology Inc. Alleges Skype Redirects Users in China to Censorware Version - Ten Days After Users Are Able To Download Freegate Software Through Skype CARY, N.C.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--DIT alleges discovery of Skype's cooperation with internet censorship in China, which DIT believes is an effort to stop the spread of DIT's popular anti-censorship tool.

Skype (http://www.skype.com), an instant messaging, voice chat and file downloading tool, is very popular in China. On September 13, 2007, DIT established its presence on Skype, so users in China can talk to DIT over Skype to get DynaWeb url and download its popular censorship-busting software, Freegate.

DIT alleges that, on the morning of September 23, the company started to receive reports from concerned users in China that now when they try to download the Skype software, Skype's website redirects them to Skype's Chinese partner's site, http://skype.tom.com, which doles out a modified Chinese version, instead of Skype's official version as before.

DIT feels that such a version of Skype from a Chinese website is questionable, as some hidden capabilities can be built-in to censor Skype's usage. In January, 2006, Business Week reported that "TOM and Skype now filter phrases such as "Falun Gong" and "Dalai Lama." According to DIT, internet freedom activists in China have been warning people about the possibility that Tom.com's versions have or will have more trojan capability to monitor and report users' activities to Chinese government.

DIT has confirmed this redirection. DIT believes this move by Skype is the result of Chinese government's pressure, targeting to curb Freegate's wildfire-speed adoption in China.

Freegate is part of DynaWeb technologies. DynaWeb enable users to evade Internet censorship and to visit websites that are otherwise blocked. DynaWeb was first launched in March, 2002. It is developed and maintained by volunteers and personal contributions, and has enjoyed great popularity among users in China and Iran, despite Internet restrictions by the governments in these countries." Think about alternatives for Skype in case it fails.

"Skype fell victim to an unrecognized problem it faced from Microsoft’s “Patch Tuesday,” and Skype claims it has fixed this vulnerability. But the fix came too late for thousands if not millions of users, especially those who paid Skype for expanded services and relied on it for business. Those who thought ahead had a backup plan in place, while others had to find alternatives quickly. Even with dozens of VoIP services to choose from, traffic for a handful — like Gizmo Project and GrandCentral — went through the roof."

Good overview article on the alternatives for Skype here.

It's a nice video-demonstration anyways. Have not tested it yet. Waiting for a sample.

Skype v3.5 management and blocking capabilities

This one is all about blocking p2p, Skype.

" REDWOOD CITY, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Check Point Software Technologies Ltd. (NASDAQ:CHKP), the worldwide leader in securing the Internet, today announced that its enterprise security gateways now have the unique ability to block Skype v3.5, the latest version of the popular consumer VoIP application. This development, leveraging Check Point's SmartDefense™ integrated intrusion prevention capabilities, is part of the company's ongoing efforts to help enterprises better manage the risks from consumer software downloaded by employees for personal use.

The addition of Skype v3.5 management and blocking capabilities is particularly critical because a new virus called "w32/Ramex.A" is currently spreading through Skype for Windows. Infected users send a chat message to other Skype users, asking them to click on a web link that can infect the computer of the recipient. With Check Point, an IT administrator could immediately secure the corporate network against the virus by simply blocking Skype use until the virus storm has passed, or limiting use to versions not affected.

Consumer applications such as instant messaging (IM), peer-to-peer (P2P) file sharing and Skype are often installed by employees without the company's knowledge or consent. Once installed on even a single PC connected to the network, the application can become an open avenue for hackers seeking to infiltrate the network. Check Point has strategically developed extensive security and management features for IM and P2P applications running across a corporate network. By offering IT administrators more granular control of these applications, an enterprise can reduce the risk of security breaches associated with consumer software vulnerabilities as well improve employee productivity by limiting distractions.

"IM, Skype and P2P applications are exciting new ways to communicate and collaborate, but enterprises must have control over anything with the potential to introduce new threats into the network," said Dave Burton, director of product marketing at Check Point. "Check Point is leading the way by ensuring that these management and blocking capabilities extend to the most current versions of consumer software applications, such as Skype v3.5."

Beyond security vulnerabilities, the potential for proprietary information to be sent off the network without approval introduces legal and competitive risks. Plus, the added bandwidth consumption from these products can increase IT costs and negatively affect the performance of the overall network. Lastly, employers may not want employees to be distracted by alternative communication mediums such as Skype, MSN, Jabber, ICQ and others.

As part of Check Point's management capabilities, IT administrators can limit or entirely block IM and P2P communications, and help set boundaries over their network traffic. Real-time updates from Check Point's SmartDefense Services provide Check Point users with the latest patches to ensure customers are protected against new exploits, vulnerabilities and protocols. Additionally, the Check Point SmartDefense engine allows administrators to add advanced functionalities that are both protocol- and heuristic-based.

For more information on how to protect against IM and P2P applications that pose a threat to enterprise security, please visit www.checkpoint.com. "

Major mobile-industry forum agreed to standardize on one type of connector : micro-USB

"The OMTP today announced that following industry consultation a recommendation paper has been agreed to help pave the way for a single, universal cross manufacturer USB (Universal Serial Bus) cable connector that enables mobile consumers to connect and charge their mobile devices.

Ratified and promoted by OMTP operator members with support from the USB Implementers Forum, this latest recommendation represents a significant step towards standardising common cable connectors resulting in obvious consumer and environmental benefits. "

"The spaghettilike nightmare that forms many consumers' collection of phone chargers, headset connectors and data cables could be set to end after a major mobile-industry forum agreed to standardize on one type of connector. On Monday, the Open Mobile Terminal Platform (OMTP)--a forum dominated by operators but including manufacturers such as Nokia, Samsung, Motorola, Sony Ericsson and LG--announced that its members had agreed on micro-USB as the future common connector. Just 2 little hardware postings that I just noticed on google. A phone which support Skype and Philips who makes a camera for Skype, just like US Robotics did 1 year ago. They always move a bit slower in big corporations... But anyways, maybe the thing got something special for Skype, but I would not be able to tell you, since without a sample I cannot write a hands-on report...

Like I suspected earlier (without downtalking the importance of the whole skype hype event), there are not so many manufacturors anymore who will come out with big innovative hardware in relation to Skype. I mean what else can be done... and will it sell ? The only thing that I think was a good one is the fixed phone with Skype embedded. Still have not seen one here in Asia, while the thing (Ipevo and some other brand got that) comes from Taiwan. No sample, no report. No buzz on the blogs, mostly followed by no sales... So probably you got a self-fullfilling prophecy there. Maybe, who knows.
The only innovative thing that would really make a buzz is a Skype enabled phone that would simply dial-up a Skype IN number (over a PSTN - line yes) and allow the user to do some VoIP calling. To the joy of the traditional telecoms, that would be.. Ho ho ho. Maybe for Christmas... Let's all go to WallMart...

Crimeware: It's Organized and It's Easy

" The world of malware has become highly commercialized — such that an entire ecosystem has come up around it. The forces arrayed against IT departments and security software vendors are formidable indeed. They include a dangerous lineup of organized criminals who do things for profit. And the increasing distribution of malware "packages" means that the bad guys no longer have to know anything about computers or software to make a buck." Telework Security Concerns Linger

" While managers are growing more comfortable with remote workers, three areas of concern remain. Managers worry about how productive the workers will be while outside the office; how their absence will impact team building; and, of course, how their data will be secured. The SonicWall survey that led to these conclusions also points to shortcomings in preparedness. For instance, only 23 percent of off-site workers have anti-virus software on their machines, only 16 percent have SSL VPNs and only 14 percent have IPSec VPNs. A startling 9 percent of those charged with security don't know what measures are in place for their remote staffs. The survey offered comparable anemic statistics for the related area of disaster preparedness. " source : IT Business Edge
