As read here " Execs at Vonage were busy this morning trying to convince customers and shareholders that the Net phone company would be just fine despite a $58 million judgment against it in a patent dispute with Verizon. They faced a tough crowd, at least in the market, where shares were down almost 15 percent, reaching a 52-week low." ...
" The larger implication, says BusinessWeek, is that "the number of VoIP-related lawsuits mounted by telcos and other entrenched players could rise. According to the U.S. Patent & Trademark Office, there are 2,273 patents related to VoIP, many of them belonging to telecom old-timers like Verizon, AT&T (T), Motorola (MOT), Broadcom (BRCM), and Cisco (CSCO). A U.S. court has ordered the Vonage Holdings, the Internet phone provider, to pay $58 million for infringing Verizon's patents, dealing a blow to a company already showing signs of stress. Vonage, which has about 2 million customers, went public last spring but has since shown signs that its business might be slowing. Last month, the company announced that it lost $286 million for the year on revenue of $607 million.
