There was a box on my desk today. Great. Something real instead of all that virtuality. I can’t help it but sometimes all that VoIP and the hype around.. Jeezus… Just try to sell something and make some money… Basically I think sometime that many of those VoIP this and that initiatives are looking for water in the deserts, but the only thing they come up with are fata morgana’s and they keep looking for the oasis. In that perspective the business-plan are nothing than the strong expression of their thurst and hunger. Not necessarily good maps to get you through the desert. What you need to walk through the desert is good guides (and you will pay them in advance), a bunch of camels and a good map. And most importantly : a direction and compass, otherwise you are lost. Having done some expeditions will help too.
Back to my box now. It’s an IPEVO Xing and it came from Taiwan. Most of the technology boxes seem be produced over there.

And as the label suggest it is genuine. Better check that here in Asia. «Easy to copy»: is a well know slogan over here. So let’s rip open the box. Nice package shipped by Fedex and neatly wrapped and protected too. I have people sending me boxes that arrived in bits and pieces due to no proper protection… So no point in doing that…
It does come in a cool box, which is important for box-sellers. Even if you don’t know this box, you would buy it.
Now let’s dig and see the reality. It almost (it actually does look better) looks as good as the marketing display and images. So here is some mug-shots. I got my hands on a real one. Works fine. No echo whatsoever.. Did some conferencing already. Really nice stuff. If I was the IT-manager in a business, I would certainly recommend this. The sound quality is great. You can use this as a conferencing dish (just like the the more expensive systems that exist on the market and you will see that there is no point to doubt that this works. It works, it works and it works.
I am putting the pictures as they are online, so you can all zoom in and almost feel it. Installation was seamless. After having ripped open the box, I just plugged in the power cord, the usb-cable (they did a nice job on providing grooves for the cabling). Windows XP recognised the hardware and then I installed the drivers. Come with a pdf-manual, Skype on the cdrom, paper manual tool. Nice box. And now it sits nice on my desk. I don’t need to wear headset anymore. No need for a usb-phone either. This works fine. It is all I need.
ps : I have made the shots a bit lighter but if you need them for your own blog. just drop me a message and I will get you your selection of the high res pictures.
Summary : this is a good product, comes neatly wrapped, neatly presented. Proper installation. Smart marketing also of IPEVO by sending it some Skype bloggers… It’s probably not so expensive to do and people get to see the real stuff. Hands on. The power of the blog. The power of the genuine testimonial. After all if this was crap, I would certainly mention it, because there is nothing what I hate more : things that don’t work and that costed money. I got a whole room full of boxes already. I could actually decorate a Christmas tree with them… and attach the VoIP usb-device a USB-hub. So you could all ring them, but the IPEVO box would certainly not be on that tree. At least not yet
and even if I would put it on the tree, it would be the star of the tree overpowering all other devices. I can’t wait till the Xing IPEVO becomes something on USB-wireless. That would be even greater.

Possible applications : every (business) location that does not have a voice conferencing right now due to price-restrictions. Well now you can have one. (business service centers, hotels, etc…).

I like it.
I don't like it.
